Reflections

I’m a graduate student at UC Davis. Now that I’ve been living in Davis, CA for a while, I can say it is quite different from what I expected, enough so that I have at times regretted choosing UC Davis over my other options. When I visited, I was told of an accepting community, but that has not been my experience. I find that when I express these thoughts, I am often ignored or told the same party line about how great Davis is, as if my experiences don’t count. The narrative of Davis matters more than treating people well.

I think it was best summed up by this quote from davisvanguard.org: “A local business owner shared stories about the experiences that his interracial grandchildren suffered.  He told the audience that if you explain this story to a black person in Davis, they understand.  When you tell it to a white person, they respond that this is Davis, a liberal and progressive city.” [Story link: http://davisvanguard.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5908:sunday-commentary-eyes-wide-open-listening-to-the-community&catid=51:civil-rights&Itemid=81 ]

So I am sharing my experiences here. Maybe those of you considering Davis will benefit from knowing more sides of the Davis story.

I was also a graduate student at UC Davis and I greatly regretted my choice to attend this school. My experience was horrible due to constant discrimination and harrassment by two professors at the UC Davis Graduate School of Management that I had to file a report. It was so bad that I dropped out of the school. It was truly disappointing. I wish I had found your blog about Davis, CA and UC Davis sooner…Thanks for writing your blog.

That’s terrible! I hope you’re off to better things, if not yet, soon!
