I’m a graduate student at UC Davis. Now that I’ve been living in Davis, CA for a while, I can say it is quite different from what I expected, enough so that I have at times regretted choosing UC Davis over my other options. When I visited, I was told of an accepting community, but that has not been my experience. I find that when I express these thoughts, I am often ignored or told the same party line about how great Davis is, as if my experiences don’t count. The narrative of Davis matters moreto the community than treating people well.
I think it was best summed up by this quote from davisvanguard.org: “A local business owner shared stories about the experiences that his interracial grandchildren suffered. He told the audience that if you explain this story to a black person in Davis, they understand. When you tell it to a white person, they respond that this is Davis, a liberal and progressive city.” [Story link: http://davisvanguard.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5908:sunday-commentary-eyes-wide-open-listening-to-the-community&catid=51:civil-rights&Itemid=81 ]
So I am sharing my experiences here. Maybe those of you considering Davis will benefit from knowing more sides of the Davis story.
